The feedback our community provided during Strategic Planning and last year's facilities conversations has generated some exciting possibilities for the Westerville City School District. As a result, we are moving forward with approximately $2 million of districtwide safety improvements and approximately $37 million of renovations to Westerville South High School. This cost is being paid from our existing Permanent Improvement levy, which means for these projects we did not have to seek additional funding in the form of a ballot request.

As a next step in the planning process, our Board of Education wants to learn what our families, students, staff and community members think about the remaining components that comprise the district’s proposed facilities vision. There have been some modifications to the original recommendations provided last year by the facilities committee. Though some of what district officials now have to share with the community has been presented before, there are some new facility and instructional program opportunities for students as well.

The Board does not believe it would be fiscally responsible to proceed with other facility projects without first talking to residents about what some of those projects may cost to complete and operate. There are logistical matters to consider, too, such as possible attendance boundary adjustments that would allow students who reside in the southern end of our community to attend schools closer to their neighborhoods.

As part of the conversation about potential future construction and safety initiatives, Board members want district residents to understand that some proposed projects would also increase the district’s operating budget. Any added operating cost means a request for slightly more millage the next time the district needs an operating levy.

District officials hope to determine if there is community desire for proposed facilities package components as developed from prior community feedback. This feedback was obtained during the strategic planning process and last year's facilities conversations with the public.
