A Fond Farewell to Central College and Longfellow Magnet Schools

May 24 – the last day of school – was bittersweet for students and staff at Central College and Longfellow Math & Science Magnet Schools in Westerville. Budgetary cutbacks caused closure of both buildings, which have served as district-wide magnet schools for more than 20 years.

While programs at these schools garnered countless local, state, and national awards during the past two decades, they will perhaps best be remembered for the exemplary partnerships they established with area businesses including Battelle Memorial Institute, Nationwide Children’s Close to Home, Innis Woods, the Westerville Electric Division and The Mad Scientist & Associates. Together the staff, students, and businesses formulated remarkable ways for children to study science and mathematics as an integral part of everyday life. Many of these youngsters went on to pursue careers in science. Programs at Central College and Longfellow will be combined and moved to Hanby when school starts again in August.
