Westerville City Schools Launch Student Connections Initiative with Support from Westerville Education Foundation

At the Westerville Education Foundation’s (WEF) inaugural Celebration of Education, Innovation & Inspiration, held at the Everal Barn this morning, Westerville City Schools Superintendent Dr. John Kellogg announced a new district initiative called Student Connections.  The program will connect students to diverse literature, mentors and tutors, as well as create opportunities to engage and address issues surrounding students’ social and emotional needs. Students also will focus on creating pathways that connect them to careers and college opportunities, as well as increase their academic achievement.

Holocaust Survivor Sofiya Karpovich to Speak at ESL Parent Meeting

Holocaust survivor Sofiya Karpovich will speak about overcoming hardship and creating a happy life filled with love and success at an ESL Parent Meeting scheduled for Monday evening, May 4, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.  The event will take place at Blendon Middle School.

Families Pack Westerville North for Nationwide Children’s Starry Night

More than 1,100 people enjoyed the Nationwide Children’s Starry Night Family Learning Festival last Sunday.  Organized by the Westerville Partners for Education (WPE), this year’s event theme, “Movement,” brought together a variety of hands-on learning activities from protozoan motion to motors to sports medicine, dance, and more.  Local businesses and organizations generously offered exhibits and programs, including Westerville North Science students and the district’s Fab Lab.  Educators also enjoyed an “Educator Preview Hour,” connecting teachers with exhibitors to seed classroom collaboration.

School Board to Meet

Prior to the Regular Session of the Westerville City Schools Board of Education on Monday evening, April 27, the Board will vote to go into Executive Session at 3:30 p.m. for the purpose of discussing negotiations.  No action will be taken.  The Regular Session will begin at 6:00 p.m.  Both meetings will take place in the Early Learning Center, which is located at 936 Eastwind Drive in Westerville, Ohio.

Family Feedback about Career Advising Policy Requested

Ohio law requires all school districts to adopt a local policy on career advising by the 2015-16 school year. Through career advising, students gain an understanding of how their interests and strengths connect to their academic and career goals.  They also begin to understand how their personal interests, strengths and values might predict satisfaction and success in school and related career fields.

Middle School Students Prepare for Regional Mock Trial Competition

The 2014-15 Regional Middle School Mock Trial teams came together at the Westerville’s City Council Chamber on March 27 to practice for the upcoming competition on April 16 in downtown Columbus.  Serving as Judge for the mock trial hearings was Westerville North Media Specialist and Coach of the State Champion Westerville North High School Mock Trial team, Zach Wilkerson.  This year’s mock trial case is based on the book Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Eight Middle School Students Move on to Central Region Invention Convention Contest

The sixth annual Westerville City Schools Middle School Invention Convention Competitions were held throughout the month of March at each of the four middle schools.  Sponsored by the Gifted Education Department and each middle school, students were invited to set up displays and be judged by a panel of distinguished educators, administrators, and community members. The top two scoring student inventions at each middle school will represent Westerville City Schools at the Central Region Invention Convention Competition which will be held on May 9 at the Columbus State Conference Center.

Heritage Middle School Wins Eighth Grade Battle of the Books Competition

The sixth annual Central Ohio 8th Grade Battle of the Books Competition, hosted by Heritage Middle School, took place at Westerville North High School on March 24.  Each of Westerville’s four middle schools competed, along with other Central Ohio teams from Whitehall, Olentangy, Gahanna, Teays Valley, and Delaware.  Teams buzzed in with correct answers about titles from the 18-book list in a Jeopardy-style contest.
