BOE to Meet in January

The Westerville City Schools Board of Education will meet at 6:00 p.m. for its Organizational and Regular meeting on Monday, January 12, 2015 in the Board Training Room at the Early Learning Center, which is located at 936 Eastwind Drive in Westerville.  The District shall make reasonable accommodation for disabled persons to be able to participate in this activity.  Please call 797-5713 or e-mail BeckJ@westerville.k12.oh.us.

Westerville City Schools Athletic Fees Can Now Be Paid Through EZPAY

SPS EZPay is a secure and convenient website application that allows parents to add to their child’s meal account or pay school, class, activity fees, and/or Pre-School Tuition over the Internet using any Visa or MasterCard (including Debit Visa and MasterCard).  Though the EZPay online payment system has been around for some time, there is now an option to pay all or a portion of the athletic fees.

Career Day at Walnut Springs Gets Students Thinking about their Future

Students at Walnut Springs Middle School were focused on the future on Tuesday, December 16 – Career Day.  Sixth and seventh graders got an overview of various careers and professions in a way that was both informative and engaging.  In the morning, a Career Fair was held in the gymnasium.  Youngsters could go from booth to booth, asking questions of more than 30 presenters representing a wide variety of occupations including those who work in the medical field, home builders, military personnel, engineers, hospitality personnel and government officials.

Fifteenth Annual Westerville Community Bowl-a-Thon Slated for February 21, 2015

It’s time to make plans to participate in the 15th annual Westerville Community Bowl-a-Thon! The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace, 5705 Forest Hills Blvd.  Funds raised from this event benefit the Westerville Chamber Foundation, the Westerville Education Foundation, and the Westerville Symphony at Otterbein.

Sixth Grade Science Classes take on the STEM Straw Tower Challenge

Sixth graders from the advanced science classes took part in the first annual Straw Tower Challenge, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) initiative.  Teams of students were asked to design and build the tallest straw tower possible capable of supporting the weight of a tennis ball for up to one minute, for no more than $10,000 in building materials (straws - $200 a piece/limit 50 and masking tape - $100 an inch/limit three feet).  The winning team was determined by the lowest total cost of their tower but the tallest tower built.

ESL Parents Learn About Community Connections

On Wednesday, December 3, ESL parents met at Westerville Central High School to learn about local resources.  The meeting’s theme was “Community Connections,” and representatives from the Delaware Area Career Center, Otterbein University, the Westerville Public Library, and WARM attended to share information about their programs.  Lisa-Marie Reinhart, enrollment coordinator of the Delaware Area Career Center, showed parents available courses of study for high school students, as well as free adult ESL and GED classes.

Walnut Springs Assistant Principal Challenges Students to Keyboarding Contest

“Mash a Key with Mr. C” was the name of an exciting event that took place at Walnut Springs Middle School on Monday morning, December 8.  Assistant Principal Ernest Clinkscale challenged the top 25 typists in Jane Elliott’s Literacy Skills for Career Education classes to a type-off.

GEM Award Nominations Sought by Westerville Parent Council

The deadline for GEM Award nominations is Monday, February 9, 2015.  Sponsored by Roush Honda and Westerville Parent Council, the annual GEM Awards, which stands for “Great Educator Mentors” in Westerville Schools, honors community members, volunteers, teachers and staff who consistently go above and beyond for students in Westerville schools.
