Westerville’s Performance Remains Strong on Redesigned State Report Card

The Westerville City School District’s latest state report card indicates that students once again attained high levels of academic achievement during the 2013-2014 school year, but also revealed areas that need evaluation and improvement.

Board President Praises School Staff for Choosing to Serve

Westerville City Schools Board President Dr. Nancy Nestor-Baker, a champion of public education, spoke to classified employees on Friday, September 12, a Professional Development Day in the district.  She said Westerville Schools has seen a lot of changes in the past few decades, including a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged children and radical growth in the English as a Second Language population.  She said she is proud of the way the district has responded with compassion and adapted to the changing needs of its student body.

Bette Marschall Grant Applications Due by October 15

Applications for monetary grants from The Bette Marschall Education Fund of The Columbus Foundation are being accepted for worthy 2014-2015 school-year projects not otherwise supported within the school budget.  The grants are available to teachers, students, administrators, and non-teaching staff within the Westerville City School District.  The submission deadline is October 15, 2014.

Fab Lab is Coming to Westerville Middle Schools

Ohio, including Westerville, as they introduce laser cutters, 3-D printing and new technology to students through mobile Fab Labs.  For the first time, students will be working “on wheels” using sophisticated machines, building robots and creating designs and programs in the new MIT Mobile Fab Labs as part of the new Innovation Generation education and workforce initiative.

Westerville Schools Ranked 18th Best in Nation by Movoto

Movoto Real Estate, a national online real estate brokerage, recently released its findings, after collecting data for 109 different suburbs using sources including the U.S. Census American Community Survey and GreatSchools.org.  They considered student/teacher ratio; money spent per year per student; high school graduation rate; and the GreatSchools.org rating (based on test scores for the area).

Cindy Crowe Named Central Region OSBA Outstanding Board Member

Cindy Crowe, a member of the Westerville City Schools Board of Education for 14 years, has been named Central Region Ohio School Boards Association Outstanding Board Member.  Mrs. Crowe passed away in July, after a long and valiant battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Her husband, Alan, has been invited to accept her plaque at the group’s Fall Conference on September 24.

First Professional Development Day is Friday, September 12

The Ohio Department of Education has approved two days in the Westerville City School District for professional development – September 12, 2014 and February 6, 2015. Classes will not be held on these dates.

Westerville Parent Council Launches New Website

Parent groups have a new online resource to connect with Westerville Parent Council (WPC) – www.westervilleparentcouncil.com.  The website details special events hosted by the WPC; lists resources to support parent groups with financial and other legal requirements; and offers links to sign-ups for GFS Marketplace Fun Funds, which raises scholarship money for deserving Westerville students each year.

WPE and Kiwanis Bring “Book Bonanza!” Program to Hanby and Emerson

Volunteers from Westerville Partners for Education (WPE) and Kiwanis of Westerville brought the Book Bonanza! program to Hanby and Emerson elementary schools this week.  These organizations collect gently used books from Half Priced Books and other donation sites, research and note the Accelerated Reader (AR) level of those books, and create book distribution events at schools called Book Bonanza!

Alcott Elementary Staff Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Joseph Uher, the new principal at Alcott Elementary School, was evidently not forgotten by his former colleagues at R. Schultz Elementary in Delaware, who encouraged him and his new staff to take the ALS Ice Bucket challenge.  They did so with enthusiasm.
