Financial Forecast Highlights Include Cash Balance Stretching Emergency Levy Additional Year

Westerville City School District Treasurer/CFO Bart Griffith on Monday presented Board of Education members with a revised financial forecast indicating the district will end Fiscal Year 2019 with a cash balance of $38.4 million.  Several factors, including belt-tightening measures by district officials and increased state revenue, have contributed to the district’s ability to maintain a cash balance through FY19, which is four years longer than originally projected when voters approved an emergency operating levy in March of 2012

Important Information to Know about Ohio’s Next Generation Assessments

Westerville City School District personnel and students continue to prepare for Ohio’s new state tests, known as Next Generation Assessments.  These assessments will be given in the areas of English Language Arts (Reading), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Parents and community members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the following key points about these new state assessments:

November 6 Seminar Scheduled Regarding College Bound Students with an IEP

A seminar called “College Bound Students with an IEP” will take place for parents, students and staff from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, November 6, in the second floor media center at Hilliard Davidson High School.  Hilliard Davidson is located at 5100 Davidson Road in Hilliard.  It is co-sponsored by the following high school transition programs:  Dublin, Hilliard, Westerville, Worthington, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights.

Westerville Central’s Jenny Horn Receives Service to Youth Award from Rotary Sunrise

Jenny Horn received flowers and a plaque from the club, along with a cake and a gift card donated by the Walmart Supercenter on Schrock Road.  In addition, an American flag will be flown in her honor during Westerville’s Field of Heroes display. She and other Service to Youth award winners will be honored at a breakfast in May.

Huber Ridge Celebrates Unity Day; Home Depot Volunteers Build a Buddy Bench

In celebration of Unity Day on Wednesday, October 22, volunteers from Home Depot visited Huber Ridge Elementary School to help students in the classrooms of Adam Flugge, George Victory and Heather Lewis build a “Buddy Bench” next to the playground.  Many wore orange that day to show their support in uniting against bullying.

Tony Zilincik Conducts Tuba/Baritone Workshop at Blendon Middle School

Learning didn’t stop in the Westerville City School District on Central OEA/NEA Day, when a variety of classes and workshops were offered including a special one at Blendon Middle School. Tony Zilincik, Associate Professor of Music at Capital University, conducted a Tuba/Baritone Workshop from 9:00-11:00 a.m.  Students and teachers from all Westerville middle and high schools were invited to attend for no cost, and they were asked to bring their instruments, music and questions.

Reggaeton Singer Guero Loco Visits Spanish Classes at Genoa Middle School

Students in Michele Gelzieichter’s Spanish classes at Genoa Middle School were treated to a visit from celebrity Reggaeton singer Guero Loco on Thursday, October 16.  (Reggaeton is a genre which has its roots in Latin and Caribbean music.)  Loco has been touring the Midwest this fall to bring his positive bilingual music program to youngsters.  He told about his journey from struggling with Spanish in high school to training as a Spanish linguist as a U.S. Marine at the Defense Language Institute.  His presentation focused on motivating pupils to want to learn another language and to show them why it’s “absolutely critical” to do so in today’s world.

Secondary Science Teachers, Staff, Complete Safety Training at Westerville Central

On Friday, October 17, the Westerville City Schools Chemical Hygiene Committee offered safety training to secondary science teachers and staff. This hands-on opportunity provided instruction on the types and proper use of fire extinguishers. In addition, a discussion was held on how to correctly respond to gas leaks and chemical exposure, and the use of safety equipment in science classrooms.

Westerville Schools Staff Learns CPR on Central OEA/NEA Day

In partnership with the Westerville Division of Fire, the Westerville City Schools Health & Safety Services department offered staff the opportunity to become certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on Friday, October 17 – Central OEA/NEA Day.
